A friend of mine thinks Russia or China will veto the sanctions, the US will be off the hook (face saved) , but Iran is not crazy ehough to nuke Israel. If the resolution did pass, the price of oil would get so high it would devastate the US economy. The whole thing now becomes something like a game of chess heading for a stalemate and stability. Is this a realistic theory?

Actually, I think it is quite reasonable. For all it's blustering, Iran has behaved in a very sane way for many years.

Plus, the greatest threat to Iran was Iraq, which is now defanged, so the only fear they might still have is an attempt at "regime change" by the U.S. However, as we've shown with North Korea, we won't "pull an Iraq" with a nation that has nukes.

In the end, I'm not sure nukes add much to the stability, though. The promise of talks, though, and hopefully even trade, would do wonders to bring not only stability, but democracy to the region. After all, it was trade and not war that made China into more an ally than a threat.

No. First the introduction of a superior (devastation) weapon into the middle east will increase tensions and not lead to stabilization. Yes, Russia and China will veto the UN resolutions but that won't let the US off the hook. It will focus the resolution on the US and it's closest allies. The price of oil may rise but I don't see it rising to the point of devastating the US economy...at least before it devastates Europe first; thus motivating France, Germany and others to do what in terms of Iran.

And yes, it is a chess game, a potentially very dangerous chess game.

Good luck to us all.

No, what is going to happen is sh!t will get deeper and deeper till as some point sh!t will hit the fan and we will find what we need to attack or we will prompt Israel to attack. Maybe we can use the fact that Iran is supporting the terrist groups and beable to attack. It is hard to know what the world leaders will come up with to get that oil. Iran will be allowed to sell so much oil to get food and supplies just like Iraq could. Now how much food and supplies they get will depend on how much oil they are willing to sell to us and at what price. But all in all it will be a good thing to get the USA off OIL and in to the AAA meetings. You know "Hi I am the USA and I am addicted to oil". Now that we have addmited it we can start to recover.

Or we can take the oil and make a killing by raising the prices anyway. Which is more likely what will happen.

IN some ways yes and in some ways no. They wont nuke anyone they arnt that stupid. There is enough oil in the west end of this country that we wouldnt have to depend on foreign oil for a long time. There will likley be small sanctions. BUT If we can have nuclear power why cant they. Its because the people in gov right now want them to stay 3rd world.

Unfortunately, there's not a chance in hell of stability in the Middle East if Iran gets a nuclear weapon. There's just too much hatred and fanaticism among the Islamic Fascists to let such an opportunity get by. They have proven in the past that they will use any and all means possible (including suicide) to kill the infedels.

I think Iran should be taken at face value and given consideration to their claim of energy production. I mean, who made the U.S. the big nuclear police. If a country asked the U.S. to stop nuclear testing, the one's in power would sh*t in their pants before they would agree to stop. So why can't someone else get ready for the big bully like North Korea has. I don't see Bush sending troops over there........

Iran should give up its nuclear weapons in order for the world to have world peace free from nukes which should also be done by US, Russia, China, UK and others.

Nope, it's just going to create an arms race among nations led by religious extremists.

There has never been and never will be peace in the middle east. Some people are just too determined to hate each other.

Have you listened to Ahmadinejad speak?? He IS crazy! He denied the Halocaust, is on a full-time mission to destroy Israel, believes Mohammed is guiding him to do this, and is anticipating the 12th imam to appear and lead his country to battle against Israel. They WANT to devestate our economy with oil prices. Their mission is to "wipe Israel off the map" (those are his words!) and destroy America (the Great Satan, they believe).

As long as Islam exists the world will be in distress. There will never be peace on a rock where People and Muslims have to share space.
