It begins when you say or do something with your "friend" that you would not say or do in front of your significant other. Or when you say or do something that you wouldn't want your significant other saying of doing with a friend. Its a slippery slope your on.
Your contemplating taking the friendship to the next level or you wouldn't be asking the question.

What you have said, is not cheating!!! It is simply a relationship with a friend whom you believe you can be open and honest with… a confidante!!!
You are entitled to have such a friend… other than your partner. No matter how strong your relationship with your partner is, there will be things that you need to talk about, that you can’t talk about with your partner. No… that does not mean you are cheating!!!
There are things that my wife feels she can’t talk to me about. Whilst I don’t particularly agree with her (I like to believe I am receptive to anything she has to say), I don’t hold it against her for feeling she needs to talk to someone other than me. I certainly do not consider that she is cheating on me. It is something she feels she needs to do (for her own peace of mind) so I don’t have any problem with it at all.
When does ‘cheating’ begin??? When you start doing something that you know in your heart is the wrong thing to do to yourself or your partner!!!

Cheating can start out emotionally. You start confiding in your friend things you wouldn't talk to your spouse about. You'd rather spend time with your friend instead of your spouse. And, you feel more comfortable or more connected with this "friend" than with your spouse.

In you current situation it not cheating. we all need some one to vent to and not to be judgemental. To hear other thoughts and view points. Relationship tend to close that door.

If your thinking about doing that, don't. Friends are not supposed to do that when you are with someone.

It starts when you start justifying things to yourself. Like when you say "well, he gives me what I want..." or " I like the way he makes me feel..." Stuff like that.
