A fob is a security device that displays a sequence of numbers that changes every 60 seconds. For example, to gain entrance to a computer network you must enter the numbers showing on your registered fob along with a PIN.
Fobs are small enough to fit on a keychain so they're easy to carry around. The internal battery lasts for about two years, then the entire unit is replaced.
Ironically, a fob also refers to a fake jewelry piece at the end of a pocketwatch chain.
