Assuming you're using Windows XP, turn your firewall on, install some antivirus software (like AVG Free antivirus), and make sure you apply Windows software patches when they become available.
Also don't open attachments from unknown senders. Don't download screen savers and other crap from the internet because they usually come loaded with spyware/adware.

The answer is all of the above and more. If you want a short answer, a layered security system is the best, which includes both hardware and software.
The most basic software you must have FOR STARTERS are:
1. A firewall software
2. An antivirus
3. SpywareBlaster
4. Opera or Firefox
5. Antipopup
6. Anti-trojan
7. Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, Windows Defender, Ewido
For details of the above, join MCH Forums and read up on all the above in detail:

Hi, you can try Norton or Mcafee to protect your computer, but you should pay for the software.
i also recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar, which can disable the virus, becasue the virus can only run on IE.
firefox can block any any poppus and disable any virus and spywareware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE. as you know, most of the virus is spread throught internet and webpage.
firefox is much smaller than IE, so i run faster than IE.
download firefox for free:

All free no need to buy a product as these work better than both mcaffee and norton (less system intensive with similar outcome):
1. Avg antivirus (http://free.grisoft.com)
2. Spybot - search and destroy (http://www.download.com)
3. Ad-Aware SE Personal (http://www.download.com)
4. Activate your windows firewall or get "Windows Defender".
