Use Yahoo Messenger and look for the "send an SMS message" link. Enter the phone number and message and send. If you know the mobile carrier of the person you are trying to text you can go to their carriers website and send one from there. Most of the mobile providers have free modules at their website so you can send their customers messages.

Yahoo messenger provides a service to the mail users to send SMS (Short Messaging Service) through yahoo messenger.
Whenever you wish to send a text message or SMS then open the person to whom you would like chat by double clicking on the nickname
Press Ctrl+T or click on the link "Send an SMS message"
If the person's mobile no.is not available in the address book then it'll prompt for mobile no.
Enter the Number and you can send SMS message...
In case if the person who is intended to receive the SMS has already registered his mobile then you can simple type the message and send it without entering the mobile number...

You have to know which phone service the person you're texting has.
Go to that company's website. It might be hard to find on the site, but all wireless companies I've sent messages with have a way to send them online to someone whose phone is with them.

Certain companies have this feature available on their respective websites. I know you can do this with US cellular and a few more.
