I am wondering how to solve this problem using a shorcut rather than a calculator. Any suggestions?

3 answers

2^28=4^14
4^17=64*4^14
64*4^14-4^14=63*4^14
63*4^14=63*2^28=63*1024^2*256
At this point, you'll still have to do three multiplications, which will be slow if you don't have a calculator. I recommend doing 63*256 and 1024^2 first, then multiplying those results. Your answer will be 16,911,433,728.
