Affiliation with the political party of your choice is a personal decision. I applaud you for deciding to take part in the political process. I would also urge you to take the next step, and vote in the general election in November.
In deciding what party to join, I would simply ask that you consider the positions of the various parties (yes, there are more than two) and how they affect you, your family, your friends. If you believe what we are doing in Iraq is proper, then being Republican is probably a good choice. If you like the overall direction of the country, and you have gained benefit from the policies of the administration and Congress over the last 5 years, then you should vote Republican. But the economic reality is that only a fraction of Americans are better off now than when Bush took office. As for the war in Iraq, consider that we have never been given the true options: do we invade Iraq, or provide health care for millions of Americans? Do we topple Saddam (who was on our payroll for decades) or guarantee an affordable college education for every student who desires to attend? At every turn, the poor and middle class in this country are facing huge tax/fee increases from every level of government, because the federal support for local programs is crashing, and because the number of people in need is skyrocketing. Deciding to invade another country that did not attack us is a choice that this president made, without debate and without checks and balances from Congress. President Bush never explained the down side, or the possibilities that are foregone, simply because the money isn't there. In November, we have a chance to remove from office those members of Congress who shirked their constitutionally mandated duty of overseeing the administration. That's my point of view, anyway.
(And by the way, I'm not affiliated with either of the two major parties.)
