It's all about perspective.

For example, Hitler was a hero to the Nazis but was a villain to the rest of the world.

Here's just one statement that applies to your question:
I'm sure pilgrims thought they were heroes for "saving" the Indians from their savage ways, but they were villains for taking Indian land and bringing disease.

I'm sorry, but what kind of example is that? Anyone who studied US history knows that because some Americans were intolerant and greedy for land for the most part, the Native Americans reacted with violence. Cause and effect. So in my opinion, the hero and villain are pretty obvious and the roles do not switch in this case.

A better example would be what midori said. The whole "taking up the white man's burden" thing. I agree that it's all about perspective. Columbus can be thought of as a hero or a villain. His "discovery" ultimately led to the United States and saved Spain for the meantime, but he brought disease, killed many people, and enslaved a lot of natives.

Yes. It all depends on your perspective. If you were on the side of the Indians, you would see the side of the story that Americans wee stealing land and forcing them to live on reservations. If you were a Confederate soldier, you would see the indians as running around burning forts down and killing soldiers. But they were BOTH fighting for what they thought was the right and good thing to do.

Hay, look!
Your hero can be my villain and my hero your villain .... at the same time ... even no need to change the situation !!!
Simply the change of references can change everything.
OK?
