My fiance and I rent an apartment. Well, we have been having numerous problems here. First our plumbing was shot but we fixed it. Then our hot water heater went out and the landlord fixed that. The coil or something like that needed replaced. This time I was taking a shower and I had NO hot water!!!!!! Our pilot light is lit so I know it's on. Any tips for what else could make our hot water just shut off like that?

If you are sure the pilot light is lit maybe the water valve above the water heater is closed. Also, it is very dangerous to have the thermostat turned all the way up, someone could be scalded.

Make sure the valve dial is on the on position. If the pilot is on turn the dial all the way up while looking at the burner. Does the burner turn on? If it does maybe the temp wasnt set correctly! Put your hand on the pipe coming out of your water heater on the top right of the unit and see if the pipe is getting hot. If it is then your unit is working like it should. Now trace that line and see if there is a valve on that line and make sure the valve is open by turning it counter clockwise all the way. If the burner doesnt come on then the thermostat might be bad. If the burner comes on and it doesnt light all the way up then there might be a clog in the line or burner. To clean turn gas off and wrench it off and shake all the dirt out of the burner and replace. Good luck

Do you have hot water in the kitchen? If not then I agree about the thermostat. It may be bad or need adjusting. Just because the pilot light is on doesn't mean that the main gas valve is coming on. You can check if there is any hot water by turning on the drain valve at the bottom of the water heater and see if the water is hot. Then you can tell your landlord to come back and fix it right.

If you have hot water in the kitchen, do you have one of those temperature setting valves in your shower? If so it is probably bad and not allowing hot water through. This is my best guess.

Maybe someone forgot to turn the water back on hot side in the bath tub or shower or when you guys was messing with the ,water heater, valves, etc or the pipes might of got clog up with stuff in side the pipes when broke lose and blocked off the hot water side you just mite have to take your bath tub handle apart but first check to see if the pipes are getting hot right before the tub that should tell you to take the handle apart..PS just a thought
But check to make sure that the burner on the hot water heater is turn on and not just for the pilot light. And see if the outlet pipe is hot on the water heater.

if it's an old house or apt. it could be the pipes running out of the water heater are clogged-- like rusted- if the pipes are galvanized- the water heater may be so old that the tubes inside the heater itself are clogged-- replace the W.H. to know for sure if it is the pipes themselves turn on the farthest water spicket to see how fast it run out why having the shower running and there should be a good stream -- if not it could be clogged pipes

Is the control on top in the "pilot" position? turn it to the "on" position. Do the neighbors also use this source for their hot water? Maybe a larger tank is needed.
A broken dip tube could also be the problem.

If the water heaters thermostat is turned on high, and the pilot light is on and does not light the burner it needs a new pilot sensor or the sensor is not positioned over the pilot light.

If the water heater was replaced it maybe that the thermostat needs adjusted, many times that is forgotten.

Ask your landlord. History wise, if he quickly took care of the issue with the heater the first time, then give hime a chance to do so again.

Maybe the mechanism in the temp. dial is broken. Did the landlord replace the heater or just have it looked at?
