One truly AWESOME game online that doesn't require too much power is Gunz: the Duel. It isn't a FPS but its a really good 3rd person shooter with some RPG elements thrown in and it is free. Another good game is Natural Selection. Its a Half-Life 1 mod, so u do need to get the original Half-Life (but that's like 10 buck on Steam) but its my favorite mod. Basically its like a combination of Counter-Strike and Command and Conquer. If you play it though you'll catch on fast.

I really can't recommend CoD for just solo play. It has a campaign which is fun but very short, can be played a couple of times but it does lose its flavor. The story in it really isn't that interesting either, and $60 isn't worth it for a 6-8 hour game. I think you should look for other military games. But past CoD games have has a mode where you can play multiplayer against AI, though they aren't very challenging to face off against. If you are really interested in it then you could probably buy it, but there are better games for singleplayer.

If you want a good FPS that is online without a lot of people, you're going to have to test a lot of games and see what you like. All of the good online games have people dogpiling on them. Half Life 2 doesn't require too much stuff. And Medal of Honor: Allied Assault was a great game that didn't require much. It has good online play. Never played it, but I heard it was fun. Otherwise, you're on your own.
