If the two nonshared rays are perpendicular, then the sum of the measure of two adjacent angles is equal to 90 degrees.

The measures of the angles is related so that when you add up both acute angles, it will equal 90 degrees. If you know one of the acute angles (which we can call X), then you know that the other acute angle must be (90-X), so that when you add up both angles:

X + (90 - X) = 90 degrees.
