Ultra sounds this late in pregnancy are so useless. I don't know why they even check the weight this late in the game. It is common knowledge that the weight (which is always a guesstament) could be off by two pounds either way. So if they say it is a 7 pound baby then you could have in between a 5 pound and a 9 pound baby.

I have known women that had their ultra sounds be off more than two pounds.

And can you believe that they will take a baby my c-section based on this stupid guess?

You know what is even a better guess about the weight of the baby? Gentle experienced hands. The doctor with my first felt around my belly/baby and guessed "around 8 pounds
" she was born three days later at 8 pounds 3 oz. With my last baby the midwife gave me a belly rub and I asked her to "guess" (just for the fun as I know it is only a GUESS) She said "between 8 and 8 1/2 pounds. Baby was born that night at 8 pounds 4 oz.

Ultrasound isn't nearly as accurate as the medical people like to think. I was supposed to have a 11+ pound baby, he was 9 and a half pounds. A friend was told very big baby, she ended up being 7 pounds even. At 39 weeks - they all feel big. lol. The most important thing, as you know, is that the baby is healthy. Anything else is secondary, and can be dealt with.

A standard ultrasound is not that reliable to predict weight. There is a much more involved ultrasound called a "biophysical profile" -- these are usually on the money.

Baby size is somewhat genetic...if your mom, sisters etc had big babies you are likely to as well.

Ultrasounds aren't accurate for size, they said I was having a 10 pound baby but he was only 8 pounds.

my doc said i would probably have a 6lb baby. well, she was 7lbs 3oz and that was 2 weeks early! considering they grow like a pound a week at the very end, she would have been huge had she gone full term! congrats! you are already 39 weeks, im sure you dont have to worry about having a teeny tiny sick baby, so no worries. no matter the size, your baby will be beautiful

They thought ny niece was going to be a big baby and she turned out average, so I guess you never know...but i have a feeling that they don't make the mistsake the other way around too often....its probably easier to tell if the baby is on the bigger side.
Good luck!

My doctor said my baby looked to be about 7.5 pounds. He was 9.5 pounds at birth. They really can't tell anything with any certainty about the baby's size until the baby is born and they put it on the scale. Good luck!

The ultra sound can tell the overall size of the baby but it cant tell how much fat it has on it...which is why they can be way off.
