India is not lagging that far behind China; it's just the impression people get.
Nobody even remembers there are Chinese people outside the metropolitan areas, in villages, who are as poor as the people in similar situations in India.
However China has one big advantage over India, that is not being democratic. In India many resources are spent trying to stay in power, pandering to the pressure groups; these resources are spent furthering development in China.
On the other hand, India's advantage is precisely this miasma, from where creativity emerges. India has Tata and Infosys who are making their mark on the world stage; India has MNCs able to compete with and outdo the Western MNCs. China has Lenovo, for example who ate up IBM's PC Division, but it's not that organic a growth.
I think that India is, in a way, 'not appropriate' for the stage of development it is in,which requires an iron fist to get things moving rather than the wastes of democracy. However, India is better suited for the next stage of development as compared to China.
So while China will grow faster than India now, India is more ready for the next stage of development, China might not be. So India will catch up, and these two countries, if they can cooperate and not be side-tracked, will soon be the top economies in the world. They have the resources, the space, the manpower, the brains, and are now getting organised.

Simple reasoning - India was part of the British Commonwealth and most Commonwealth Countries in Asia are far more developed than those of former Socialist Countries. However, with the "Open Door" Policy implemented by China, the country is now advancing very quickly, compared to India. While India manufactures heavy vehicles and diesel-powered vehicles, China's already started to implement the usage and even going to the start the manufacturing of Electric-powered cars. By 2008, with the Beijing Olympics upcoming, China should be ready for the world. Electric cars and trains, wireless technologies and maybe even the most advanced clean toilets in the World!

IN India MOST political leader are uneducated, with little schooling, who are really interested in filling up their coffers, and change policy according to their personal need, and not as per need of the mass.
If anyone wants to start a business he has to obtain various permissions, which takes nearly 6 months, by that time the entrenepeur is half dead, with most of the spirit he has had in starting the business is lost.
Next the corruption level is very high. Politicians instead of fighting for the true cause, fight for the vote bank related cause.
Some Politicians coming for from a poor family have amassed huge money so much ,such that they hold a major stake in some companies,Airlines etc.
In one report it had come that a politicians son spends about Rs.70,000/- to Rs. 1,00,000 a day for drugs, drinks partying etc. This amount is an annual income to some and for others this is a dreams income.
If atleast this is taken care of it will not be far for India to overtake China.

the thing is that india, when you go there, you can still see homeless kids living on the streets with no schooling. in China that's very hard to find, but in India you can still see that, which is why india lags behind.

They have too many riots and corruption in the criminal scene. They do have good advances that are putting China to shame as far as technology goes. But there is still abject poverty. This poverty can not be handled if people are killed for money or dishonor, etc.
