I think I understand where you're coming from. If you say fam-i-ly, you sound a little dorkish but if you say famly, you sound a little doofus.

No, but the word "friends" sounds cheesy. Maybe it's the TV show. "Buddies" sounds ok, but the word "friends" makes me want to hit someone.
