"does he have to read the really hard books to get a high score??"

Of course he does, thats common sense. But could there be a chance that the 5.0 was a misprint? It might be worth enquiring.

Usually the student gets 0.5 points if the test is 5 questions and he answers them correctly or 1.0 points if the test is 10 questions. If they miss one or 2 questions they get 0.4 or 0.9. If they made a lot of mistakes they get 0 points and they have to take the tests again.( I have heard that the level and score is different in other schools so you can check it up with the books the kid brings home).

AR measures the level of the students and the % of correct answers. He could have a 95% of correct answers but with a 1.6 AR level, that means good answers but he read books of first grade and six months.

It is no use for a kid to read books level Kinder or first grade when they are in 3rd (except if they are learning English or have difficulties reading). They need to read almost all the books from 3rd grade.

About the level of the books, sometimes you find small books rated as 3rd grade and big books marked for 2nd. Students usually have more problems in non ficition than in fiction books.

Encourage your kids to read always 3rd grade books, it would be better for him in the long run that a lot of points gotten reading kinder books.
