Goodfellas- The book was filled with anecdotes and details, but somehow Scorsese and Pileggi managed to fit nearly everything into the movie.
A Clockwork Orange- I thought it was a very good adaption, I don't know why the author was so mad at Kubrick for the way he adapted it.

Some of the books I don't have to read because the films were adapted so well:
Jules and Jim, by Francois Truffaut
The Tin Drum, by Victor Schlondorff
The Unbearable Lightness of Being, by Phillip Kaufman
Once Upon a Time in America, by Sergio Leone
Paris, Texas, by Wim Wenders

Shogun by James Clavell

The 12 (or was it 14?) hour version, not the 2 hour mini-movie. It was so close to the book and the true history of the period, it was eerie. I read the book first and the visuals in the long version made it all come alive for me. There are many more, but none has had the majesty of Shogun

The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle.

Probably the only book/movie that I like equally in both formats.
