As my above statements says, when i come to a stop light or complete stop and the AC is on, it makes a sounds similar to a car horn. i havent noticed anything overheating or engine temp rising. what could this be and how can i fix it? thanks for your help!

It may be a restriction in the A/c expansion valve. I have seen many of these valves go bad on the Cherokee. And a restriction in the valve will make a whistling type noise. I would have a closer look at the valve. It could also be an intake air solenoid problem at idle, or a humming noise from the vapor management valve, I have seen this also on the Cherokee. I am a technician at a Ford/Chrysler dealership and your concern will require more diagnosis than what you will receive here. I would suggest a visit to the local dealer, or a reputable repair facility that you trust.

Probably your clutch on the A/C compressor is about worn, or the bearing is shot. And of course will need fixing. You can either replace the whole compressor, or replace the parts on the compressor that are worn. Good luck.

most likely its a bearing in your compressor, especially if you only hear it when at idle, one thing you can try is to turn your blower motor down to low and see if it changes because it could also be that
