HA HA HA. No, theft is theft. Now if you FIND something, and nobody claims it, after you turned it in to the police, It's between 6 months and a year, and it's yours.

You may be outside the statute of limitations for a charge against the evil doer (if there was any evidence in the first place), but the property (if found) still belongs to the legal owner, regardless of the time that passes by. Example: expensive artwork and artifacts that disappear for decades are suddenly found, or someone snitches someone else that has it, and it goes back to the original owner.

Standard legal answer: it depends.
It depends on when it was taken, the circumstances at the time it was taken, who you took it from, how much it's worth, what you did with it during the interim, and most importantly what state and federal laws apply.
That's why attorneys get licensed to answer these type of questions based on specific facts. If you want to trust random anonymous opinions on the internet, your choice....

stealing is wrong and one day you look in the mirror and see a thief. it does not matter the value. then if you take lie detector test and someone asks if you ever stole that could haunt you. better not to do it - you don't want to give up a career for some minor indiscretion do you?

If the statute of limitations has expired, you cannot be prosecuted for a crime. But that does not mean the item is "yours". If the owner is able to prove you stole it, he can still get it back through a civil court action (lawsuit).
