i am helping my neice with her homework. In the phrases "makes no sound and does no work," are "sound" and "work" nouns?

we thought so but the paragraph is supposed to have 25 nouns... all intotal with the title it has 27 nouns not 25.

Yes. In this case, sound and work are objects and therefore nouns.

"sound" and "work" are nouns. If you're only supposed to have 25, maybe you've miscategorised 2 other words as nouns, or maybe you're not supposed to count the title? Is it possible there really are 27 and the exercise saying 25 is in error? Or maybe the teacher said 25 to see if the students had enough confidence in their grammatical knowledge to say "25 is wrong, there are actually 27".

Yes - makes and does are your verbs, while sound and work are functioning as nouns (since they are the objects of the verbs)
