Tell him that smoking is the slowest form of suicide ever to be invented by human beings.
I think that smoking is a sign of poor emotional health he should look into emotional counseling for whatever the problem is.

I have seen habits of this type almost entirely vanish after the emotional stress has been dealt with correctly. Smokers often use the habit as (a self destructive) escape route from their problem's however it often causes more problems and adds to the existing problem in a vicious feedback cycle.
A persuasion tactic you can use is your desire not to suffer the effects of second hand smoke. quite a few of which over lap the effects of first hand smoke.

Another thing you can try is stealing the cig's and flushing them down the toliet.

He knows the dangers of smoking. It will probably do no good to complain--in fact it might ruin your relationship if you nag too often. You could tell him you want to have an important conversation with him. Do this sitting not standing. Sitting makes any conversation more serious and important. Simply tell him that you love him and you want him to help you with your children (his grandchildren) as they come along. You don't want him to die early just because of smoking. Also you can suggest that he try prayer if he has trouble quitting. I quit after 20 years by using the power of prayer.

Do library research on lung cancer and emphysema, get pictures of lungs filled with cancer. show him the pictures and explain that you want him to be around for a long time so that his grand-kids get the chance to know him. the cost of the aids to help him quit might actually be comparable to the cost of the packages of the cigarettes. and once he's quit tell him that the price he used to pay for his habit can go into some fund or another for something that he really wants like a boat. rewards worked for us growing up.

This is a tough thing to do. Your dad wont quit until he personally wants to. You should try not to nag and instead focus on the positives your dad displays. For example, if he cuts down on the number of cigarettes per day, praise him. Try to motivate him to start slowly, provide stories/testimonials of others who quit. Ask him to speak with his doctor.

Try talking to him about it, tell him that not only it bothers you, but he is killing himself. If he doesn't listen and continue to smoke, then I guess there's nothing you can do. He'll stop when he wants to.
