Get an acoustic, they're easier to learn on, and you should probably go with the one from Target. Used guitars are great if you know what to look for, but if you're new to guitars you can get ripped off really easily.
Try http://www.musiciansfriend.com/
THeir guitars are cheap but of better quality then Target.

DO NOT get a cheap one from target. You can by an inexpensive guitar from http://www.musiciansfriend.com It will be so much better than what you can get at Target. If you want something really cheap, I'd recommend a Washburn or Epiphone or something along those lines. Or for just a tiny bit more you can get the Applause by Ovation which is a much better guitar.

NOT EVEN CLOSE!!! i played real guitar before i played guitar hero and the only use i got was that it helped me use my pinky more in real guitar and it helped me build up a little speed but even though you can play on expert get ready for a big surprise, just take real playing very very slow at 1st and get comfortable with positioning your fingers on the different strings and frets, just remember you won't have the speed of through fire and flames just after a couple of lessons

I kinda thought the same when I wanted to learn. So I started looking around in pawn shops and found my first electric guitar which was a copy of a Gibson Les Paul. It was pretty cheap and it sounded really good and I had it for years. Now I moved up to better equipment.

The thing about guitars is..the cheaper the guitar the cheaper the sound...and strings etc..
Also there are many makes of guitars that have wide necks..and are fretted high...
this will hurt your hands..fingers...
If you want a good quality guitar that is perfect for beginners and experienced players..that is an epiphone by gibson..
it has a narrow (sweet neck) its freted low so you dont have to press hard...they have a great sound..and are not over priced...
if you take care of it dont beat it up..you can get most of your money back on resale..if you dont like it...

Good luck...........playing for 20 years..I own 7 guitars..and my epiphone remains my fav.........

:)

Get one from target. NOT the stratocaster imitations with the lion on the cover. Get the ones that look more like Les Paul.

Those guitars are actually pretty good quality.

If you want an acoustic, get a used one from a music store.

If you can avoid it don't get a cheap guitar,it's better to start with one that has a good sound to it(target guitars sound horrible)see if you can find someone who knows guitars to help you pick out a good used one.(there's a lot of great deals at www.musician'sfriend.com on scratch and dent(guitars with very minor blemishes)

well, you could get kits like for 100 something even electric ones for cheap with everything.and a tip electric guitar is more easier than acoustic just beacause you cant put your fingers on the frets more easier there not as thick as acoustic. you could check out these kind of guitars for good prices at www.zzounds.com or www.guitar center.com guitar center has many locations

Those guitars from Target are nothing but crap. Get one from musiciansfriend.com or music123.com, very cheap.
