First, you need to write a business plan. This takes some extensive work, but you should be able to find a book or a computer program at your local library that will help you do this. Without a business plan, it will be very hard to obtain funding from any sort of bank. Other ways could be to take out equity on your home, if you have any, but a business plan is still recommended, since your house is at stake if you fail this way. Once you have a plan, you may even qualify for loans from the small business association. Check them out at http://www.sba.gov. Hope this helps, and best of luck in your endeavors.

The question is, what kind of business do you want to run? What plan do you have laid out to begin, and keep it going to at least 5 years from now? 10 years from now? 20 years, and so on from now? What is your vision for it? And the BIGGEST question is... how much are you willing to invest into it (money and time wise)? What changes are you willing to make within yourself to get it going? This is a big question that often is overlooked, because honestly it takes personal growth in order to make a business function properly. Because a successful business is never run with an employee's mindset. The two mindsets do not mesh. There are many questions you need to honestly be able to answer for yourself before you begin any business venture.
Some books to invest in before beginning any venture or planning stages I highly recommend are listed below. My husband and I have read all of these, and have helped us thus far begin and continue to build a very successful business. Plus we plug in with awesome mentorship with leaders who have also built successful businesses of thier own. Two things will help you become successful when it comes to your own business, and life in general...
1) The people you associate with
2) The books you read
Keep this one thing in mind, the success of your business first begins in you, your mind. It never begins in the money it produces. Money is only the relfection of the changes made in you.

I recommend that your first step is to take a look at the wealth of resources available at the Small Business Administration website at http://www.sba.gov
They provide tons of information on what you need to prepare, financing options, licensing information, etc.
