To distinguish between the two parts of America that fall on the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere of the Earth. America spans across so much of the Earth, that having North and South Americas helps distinguis between the two, especially since they experience different seasons and such.

By two parts, I guess you mean east and west of the Rockies and/or the Mississippi River. The Rockies as a divider were formed when a enormous glacier during the last ice age "dived" down out of Canada and cut the plains states flat. The actual formation of the Rockies is due to pressure in the Tech-tonic Plates pushing up the geography of what is now the Rockies. The glacier just got rid of everything in the middle and water run off formed the Mississippi River.

There is also a great cultural difference between the east and the west. For that matter, East, West, South, and Southwest. To begin to understand that difference, you have to look to the history of this country, and how it was only to the Mississippi River as by the Louisiana Purchase. The formation of the country west of the Mississippi was due to the concept of "Manifest Destiny", or the duty of Americans to spread west of the Mississippi to spread freedom, religion and democracy to the "savage" west.

So geography formed the barrier, and culture accepted that barrier and separated the country as settlers and "frontiersman".
