The United Kingdom is the country. Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland are not countries.

The United Kingdom is made up of four countries - England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland - not to be confused with Great Britain which is just England, Scotland and Wales.

Just to avoid any confusion - saying Ireland is part of the United Kingdom is like saying Canada is part of the United States. Ireland is a country in it's own right and is next to the United Kingdom. Northern Ireland is separate from the rest of the UK but is attached to Ireland - much the same as Alaska is attached to Canada but separate from the rest of the US.
