Some believe that these were alternative lyrics used by the British army during the revolutionary war. A "macaroni", in mid-18th-century England, was a fashionable fellow; the joke being that the Yankees were naive enough to believe that a feather in the hat was a sufficient mark of a Macaroni. Whether or not these were alternative lyrics sung in the British army, they were enthusiastically taken up by the yankees themselves.

In the late colonial days of America, It was fashionable to deck one's self out in ostentatious clothes. In the colonies, this practice was considered foppish or overly pretentious--as an attempt to imitate the upper class without having the real goods. The fashion was called Italian, and the imitation was called Macaroni Italian, meaning that one wanted to be upper class, but did not know how to be. Thus, a person who lacked class might try to imitate high class by simply sticking a feather in his cap, or adding some other useless item to his apparel to fool other people who could not tell the difference.B.

It was the whole effect of having the feather in the hat that was "macaroni". Being "macaroni" was like "stylin'". It meant you had serious high fashion sense. The British were making fun of the Yanks, whom they thought of as a bunch of bumpkins, when they sang this song!
