Most common?

Lower block halves. There was a problem with the sealing surface finish and the sealer GM used didn't hold up. All the earlier built Northstar engines...up til the late 90's...had this problem and most likely will develop a leak sooner or later. It starts out as just ~sweat~ then becomes a mess.

The repair is major and will cost a few $$. It involves engine removal or as I have done it...remove the front frame assembly and transmission. Then using the jig that supports the engine when the trans is removed, lower the engine about a foot and disassemble the lower end. You will end up exposing the lower half of the crankshaft main bearing journals...that gives you an idea of what is all about. Replace a few gaskets, a spacer plate and use anaerobic sealer on the surface that was the cause of the leak.

Big job and Big $$$...and alot of work! I've done at least a hundred of them if not more.

Imerc is right, also if it seems to be coming frome the rear main seal, get a flashlight and look into the valley under the intake manifold right behind the power steering pump. If the valley has oil in it, you have a bad headgasket. The older, 90's models used to leak oil from the passage that feeds the valve train. It will fill the valley and run out the rear of the engine. I have had 2 ,2001 models that had bad rear main seals, GM has redesigned the seal, and has started using a different sealer on the oil pans. They do not use the anerobc stuff anymore.
