Sharks are simply defending their own territory. Plus, there's a fear of the unknown when you venture into the big wide ocean.

I have an intense fear of them. Why I don't know. I've never encountered any in my life. I have never seen Jaws nor do I plan to anytime soon. I did see many previews for Open Water which scarred me though.

Their teeth play a big part of their image that scares people. Attacks are alot more common than people say. Surfers for example, to a shark, look just like their main source of food which are seals. So they take a bite of the surfer and spit him out because they realize too late that it's not a seal. The damage they do can easily be fatal. Also, it's not a good idea to go in the water with a cut on your body, or as a friend of mine's father did once, threw chum (another of their food sources) in the ocean right where she was swimming and told her there was nothing to worry about. Because they have an intense sense of smell that far greater than any human's.

A couple yrs ago I was watching a documentary on sharks on History Channel where they interviewed a man who was barely ankle deep in the water at a popular crowded beach long before Jaws even came into existance and was attacked by a pretty good sized shark. So anything is possible. Plus, if the many news stories on the various attacks had absolutely no substance, they wouldn't make headlines, even if they are blown slightly out of proportion.

Anytime you venture into the water, your spot on the food chain drops significantly and you are completely at the mercy of whatever is out there.

That said, I think it's justifiable to be afraid of the water. But as long you play it safe, you should be fine.

The media has played a role in shark scares. Don't be scared of them. Just don't swim in a wet suit in shark infested waters or they will think your a seal.

For one thing, all those teeth.

They will try to eat anything that's not trying to eat them. They do so without remorse, regret or (for that matter) hatred or anger.

But the one thing that I always notice about sharks: Their eyes. You look into that eye, it's black, like it's bottomless and my instinct tells me there's no soul. It's like a portal into the cold and fathomless depths of death.

Sharks themselves aren't scary. You react to seeing a shark with a sense of fear, so the question really should be 'why do I find sharks scary?'.My guess is that a) you've seen Jaws films, b) you don't realise that shark attacks are incredibly rare, c) you've seen Jaws films, d) you've seen Jaws films.

oh you know, they rip people apart and all that, but remember not all sharks want you as a takeaway, basking sharks may look like great whites with their fins but they're pretty harmless to humans
