Many, many years ago, in a much calmer time, when all there was to worry about was the Cold War, the spread of communism, ballistic missiles in Cuba, and the Viet Nam conflict, people did not have cell phones and, when they were out of the house, had to rely on pay phones. Back then, though, pay phones were in booths that were kept clean and had a phone book hanging on a chain for a caller's convenience and one could contact anyone locally for five cents. Now days, pay phones are usually located in some sort of hooded abomination, open to the elements, located so close to a street or highway a caller risks being run down. The phone book that should be on the chain has invariable been completely destroyed for no better reason that it was made of material easily destroyed. Then, if one has the nerve, he or she picks up a receiver that has apparently been dipped in some goo you'd find disgusting to step in, inserts a quarter, and dials a second party who, once they answer, can't hear what the caller is saying or vice verse. No wonder you asked this question. You want to know whose had the courage, determination and stomach to brave such a modern day convenience. Well, not me!

Is it not the freakiest thing? I don't have a cell phone. I have had to use payphones. I do have a home phone of course but still. You pay a lot of money for someone who can't hear you and you ALSO have to drive far to find one anymore. We don't all have cell phones. My credit is bad and I don't want to pay 25 cents a minute to talk for a prepay. So.......
They used to be everywhere and they also used to work. Now, believe it or not, are considered ---- for drug dealers.....ah haaaaa.....there ya go!!!!!

Yes...but what's the big deal about payphones? They're everywhere around here. And most of them eat your money.

Yeah. When I moved back from Europe in mid-87, I saved two dimes so I could make a couple calls when I got back, BUT THEY COST A FRIGGIN' QUARTER BY THEN! Went cellular in 1990 and never been back. Except when...but that is another story.

lol, I remember these things. You couldn't drag them through stores talking loudly to your friends and family so they fell out of favour.
Actually, I still always have a quarter and I know where the phone booths are in my neighborhood. I forget to plug my cellular in all the time.
