"Horizon Line". Its all in the horizon line. Choose where you want the sky to meet the earth on the picture plane and draw a line from left to right. YOu can do it straight, or bumpy like mountains. Then you can add trees, the ocean, a pond, whatever you want. Just start with the horizon line. Good Luck!

If you're looking for realism, and you're a beginner, you may be able to train yourself from photographs. You could start by taking photographs, enlarging them as you need, and tracing with vellum and graphite for outlines, then textureing afterward.
You could do the same thing with an overhead projector, but that could be more tedious and costly.

use "texture" pages....."textures" are the thing.....marble....seamless repeatables....manga....using a scanner makes everything that you might want to do excessible!!!you can scan-in images into a drawing program and literally make collages of many disperate and distinct objects into want your final conception would be!!! a mix of "randomness" and "specific identifiable"images i believe works the best!!!!
