From the Princeton Wordweb Dictionary:

Democracy: government by the people or by their elected representatives; a political system in which the supreme power lies in a body of citizens who collectively vote to make decisions

Republic: a political system in which the supreme power lies in a body of citizens who can elect people to represent them

So, a democracy is any system where the power is held by the people, who freely vote to make decisions. A republic is a form of democracy, not the other way around.

A republic is a type of democracy. Our country is a democratic republic.

A republic such as ours is a good thing, because, for example, you don't want EVERY PERSON IN AMERICA to know all of our national security secrets. You want to keep those kinds of things in small circles of trusted advisors.

The idea is that people will realize their flaws, and choose leaders that are better suited to rule the free world than them and their high-school education.

It's a good system.
