After repeated attempts, what finally worked for me was a combination of the patch and gum. Even though I smoked a pack a day, I bought the 14 mg patches, and instead of the 4 mg gum, I bought 2 mg gum, and I did them together. I only ended up taking the patches for like 4-5 weeks, but I continued to chew the gum for a total of 6 months. In the end I was pretty depressed because I realized I was self medicating so I was put on wellbutrin 300 mg (150 to start) (zyban) So, it has been like 8-9 months I'm a non smoker.
By the way I am the type of smoker that my husband thought would NEVER quit. I feel if I can do it anyone can do it. It also helped that what little alcohol I drank, I stopped so as to not let me
start again. I hope this has been of some help and good luck.

Sorry, but you already know the answer. JUST DO IT! I'm sure you already know all the reasons not to smoke, and even the promise of death has not induced you to quit smoking. Remember that no drug in the world will make you stop smoking until you decide that you WILL quit.
So if after all that knowledge you still are smoking, then you need outside help. I suggest you seek psychological counsel. It is true that there are addictive chemicals in the cigarettes, but your will to survive SHOULD outweigh their addictivness. If they don't then you need help. The cost of counsel will more than pay for itself in all the money you save after you quit smoking.

Physically, you have to stop the way you started - as you once slowly increased from nothing, now you have to gradually taper off to nothing. But really, I am afraid it is mind over matter. Psychologically, you have to get to the bottom of why you started in the first place and deal with that. If you have money to burn, try hypnotherapy and acupuncture and the nicotine patch or nicotine gum. The key is not the drug at the end of the day though - it's why you became addicted to the drug in the first place. Solve that and you will solve the addiction.
