Do Guinea Pigs Bite?

It's wise to remember that they have long and extremely sharp front teeth, but if you treat your guinea pig kindly you are very unlikely to get bitten.

We have had guinea pigs for five years, only once have I had a real bite, and that was entirely my fault for grooming over-vigorously and ignoring the warning I was given. A guinea pig will usually give a clear warning (castanetting, chattering of the teeth) of a possible bite.

They will check you out with an experimental nibble sometimes, which does no harm.

It may seem obvious but children don't always realise, if you hand feed something to a guinea pig don't get your fingers in the way of the teeth.

If two guinea pigs are squaring up for a fight, do not handle them until they have been separated and have calmed down, or you may get bitten. This would be true of any other situation where a guinea pig has become hurt or frightened.

Well.. if Guinea pigs are handled correctly they don't really bite, but it does depend on each animal. If handled roughly then they might bite. I have 2 and I got them from petsmart. They are the sweetest things and have never bitten me.

Not generally.
Guinea pigs are much more even tempered than hamsters and gerbils. They may occasionally nibble on your fingers if they are hungry, but it really doesn't hurt and they don't draw blood. I've had over a dozen guinea pigs and have never had one that bit.

Until just recently, I would've said no. However, one of my pigs (my grumpy old man) has taken on a nasty habit of turning and snapping at me (almost like a dog would) when I do things he's not overly fond of (like cleaning his rear end or clipping the long hair there so it doesn't get tangled and dirty) no matter how gentle I am about it.

Before this started he'd only occasionally nibble at my fingertip curiously, much like he would do when trying a new fruit or vegetable for the first time. He'd only do it once and then stop, realizing I wasn't food, I guess.

They will bite when fighting with other guniea pigs but other than that, they just do little "love nibbles." They do lick quite a bit so dont freak out when they do put theyre open mouth to your body.
I have guniea pigs and I have found this site to be extremely helpful and they have really great links too.

I additionally particularly circumstances use dishwashing detergent. yet whichever one i exploit, I be sure I rinse it off fairly properly, only in case the piggies can fall ill from it. Bedding is a private determination with guinea pigs, i've got found. i exploit fleece bedding and locate that it works fairly properly for me, yet i understand guinea pig vendors that use timber shaving and CareFresh and all kinds of alternative stuff that they swear by ability of. you're able to try Aspen shavings and see if it makes a distinction on your cage. stable success with each little thing!

They can bite, but usually they just nibble which is why I think people persume they are biting them when infact they are just curious. I think its a bite if they make the skin bleed....
