I recommend some places I like to be:
Athens
Restaurants: in Plaka area "Platanos" it' s an old fashion small restaurant. Very good food and prices.
Psiri area "Safran" Lepeniotou str Nice food, amazing sweets not very cheep but very good restaurant.
Piraeus area a cult tavern "Margaro"126 Xatziliriakou str only fry shrimps and fry small fish (as smelts). Amazing food low prices, not tourists at all there!
Places (Don't miss)
1. Poseidon's Temple in Cape Sounion (specially during sunset)
2. Lucabetus hill
3. Microlimano in Piraeus area
4. Thisio area for a coffee
5. Swimming near Athens, in the small Vouliagmeni lake or Athens seaside (best beaches Varkiza, Lagonissi)
6. Saronic gulf islands (the most quite is Agistri near Aegina)

If you pick a good guide, nothing will be left out. All depends on how long you tend to stay; if you stay for a week, take the low cost guides, you will find all main tourist attractions with maps. If you stay longer, or you have been there before, take a more detailed version... it will lead you to those places you would hate to miss.
Enjoy your stay
