I can't really answer your question because I will be asking the same question. I want to be a writer, but am still in the first stages. However, I wanted to reply because I wanted to say don't give up and persevere because I am a great fan of Stephen King, probably one of the best writers. He tried to get published and they told him to get a day job but he insisted and persevered and started with the famous 'Carrie'. I hope that you don't mind that I replied, but I just wanted to say it will get somewhere, nothing is impossible.

Make alot of copies of your book then send it in to every publishing company there is. Also network, try to get some connections involved or some how associated with the world of publishing. Then keep trying for every 100 no's you will get one yes. Dont get discouraged just keep trying. Everything is possible as long as you never give up until you make it happen.
Best of luck with your book

Have you tried Random House Publishing? They're good for new authors!

Get an agent and they do the legwork for a cut of the profits - no sale no fee.
Get a copy of the Writer's and Artist's Yearbook.
Good luck. I am stuck on the last chapter of mine.
