If I recall correctly, this is a song to Julian Lennon, John's son from his first wife, Cynthia. This was just about the time Yoko came into John's wife and I think it was Paul's way of encouraging Julian.

Paul wrote it to Julian Lennon, during the time John & Cynthia were divorcing because of that thing John was in to...Yoko Ono. Paul was trying to give Julian a different perspective on the situation, and help him accept Yoko into his life as well. Thats how I'd heard it years back.

The Beatles wrote many songs that were really about drugs and this one was about John's heroin habit even though Paul try's to say it is about Julian. Especially note the lyrics:
"The minute you let her under your skin Then you begin to make it better" and
"And any time you feel the pain, hey, Jude, refrain Don't carry the world upon your shoulders".
The first line is obvious, the second line I think is a warning about not doing it every day, to take a break or dry out occaisionally?

"You have found her now go and get her" is about scoring the drug.

Paul McCartney sang the song for John Lennon's son, Julian. from what i have heard, John was getting a divorce from his first wife and Julian was young then and he was going through some tough times because John later married Yoko Ono; who Julian didn't like.
