I highly recomend not mixing the two. The rat will likely kill your hamster. Rats can be teritorial to eachother, and when with a similar species, may see it as a threat to resources, or even a meal.

Besides not getting along, they also have different dietary needs and even though you put each ones different food in the cage, they eat whatever they want to so the rat will eat the hamster food and the hamster will eat the rat food. Also, the toys can be a problem too. A rat running wheel tends to be a bit bigger than a hamsters so if the hamster uses it, his legs or feet could fall through the openings and cause severe injury. And if you use a smaller running wheel to fit the hamster and the rat uses it, the wheel can cause back injuries for the rat. my best advice is that a cage can never be too big for an animal. Think about it, whould you rather be locked up in your bedroom for the rest of your life or be locked up in a mansion for the rest of your life?

Hamsters can't even get along with each other. A hamster and a rat will most likely injure or kill each other.

My cousin had a cage full of hamsters and they get along fine. I don't think rats are compatible with hamsters in general and the rat will probably attack the hamster.

I don't think so. Hamsters are solitary, they don't even like to share their space with other hamsters, so I think a rat would definitely not make the hamster happy!

Make sure they get along with each other first! It would be terrible if they had a fight and one or both of them got killed or injured! Check an online pet info page to see how big a space each animal needs, then decide if your cage fits both their needs.
