You can check out the rest of your system (laptop and desktop) specs here. The expansions will need yet more resources so be sure to run a test for the expansion you might want.

That hard drive is pretty small and a couple of expansions will have at least half of that filled up, plus you need room for your saved games and downloads. You need space to run your OS, security software, and other stuff so you will need to get a larger hard drive...

Laptops not built specifically for graphics and gaming will tend to run slow, overheat and just shut down. And Sims 2 is very intense and some scenes may take more than a minute or two to load on some machines. Plus the more customizations you want in the game, the slower an average machine will run.

You ask how to keep a machine running fast. One has to keep it defragmented, and at least once a week check it for viruses and spyware. Often there are some programs that aren't used any more that are trying to load. Wouldn't hurt to lose some of those too. There usually is a simple reason why a machine takes a long time to boot up, so you may want to have someone try to fix it.

If possible, try to fix the sick machine and find out what is ailing it. If it can go online, see if it can do better with the test above. If it does, then you can decide which of the two will be less expensive to upgrade. You may just need to get someone over there who can optimize/clean up your machine.

Good luck!

Laptop are not very good to run resource intensive games like sims, my sis had hers shut down when in the middle of this game. Her pc is 3.0 ghz processor with 512 mb ram (toshiba). You would be better off using a tower pc. Each pc game has minimum requirements on their box to determine if you have enough resources to play the game. Most laptop video cards aren't too strong for many of the games out there. Regards.

a 512 stick should do it fine .. about 50 bucks at newegg for ddr ... you may need the older pc100 or 133 which would be slightly more expensive ... around 80$ for 512mb ... and bill is right ... its doubtful an older laptop will have the video power to run sims2.
