Recently the FDA revealed that shark, swordfish, king mackerel, tilefish, and tuna fish contain higher levels of mercury and other harmful metals than do other fish. This is because these fish tend to live a long time before they are caught, thus allowing more pollutants to get into their tissues. These pollutants may be harmful to a developing fetus.
Fish, loaded with omega-3's is good for you when pregnant. Salmon has the highest level of DHA (the most important healthy fat) and other omega-3's, and is one of the least contaminated fish. Tuna (not canned tuna) also has lots of DHA, but may also be more polluted. You CAN eat tuna and the other fish mentioned above, but you should only do so once or twice a month so you don't overload your system. Do not make any of the contaminated fish a routine part of your diet.

Consumer Reports is advising pregnant women to avoid eating tuna, as the mercury content in the fish could potentially harm the nervous system of a developing fetus.
The advisory challenges government recommendations that it's safe for pregnant women to eat small amounts of the fish. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesn't advise pregnant women to avoid tuna consumption, but says they should have no more than 12 ounces per week. And when choosing which fish to eat, pregnant women should limit albacore tuna (white tuna) or tuna steak to no more than 6 ounces per week, the FDA says. Albacore tuna is thought to contain more mercury than canned light tuna.

Tuna and salmon both can contain mercury, which is a poison. Other fish can also be harmful due to polluted waters. High fat fish and shellfish seem to be more unhealthy than other types of fish. A little fish, even tuna or salmon, once in awhile should not be a big deal. I wouldn't eat it every day though. Good luck!

I purely examine an editorial at my Obgyn's workplace immediately that stated the hype about tuna and mercury is really over blown. It said that the benefits of eating tuna, between different sorts of fish, outweigh the risks. Tuna contains omega-3 it really is mandatory for mind progression in fetus' and growing babys. yet, in the journey that your worried, i'd analyze the risks your self. Edit: i'm purely declaring what I examine immediately. i'm very conscious that there are different fish accessible that contain omega-3. i in my view stay faraway from fish because i do not particulary like it. I do take a DHA supplement even with the undeniable fact that...this is stated as Expecta and is made in certain for pregnant and nursing moms.

Tuna can contain high levels of mercury. I was told not to eat more than 1 can of tuna a week while pregnant.

You can eat it, but only a few ounces a week. It has to do with the high mercury level in these types of fish. Some doctors suggest you stay away from it alltogether to be safe. This was really hard for me since I craved tunafish when I was pregnant.

There are specific types of fish like : shark, mackrel, sword fish.
But with tuna, light tuna is alright from what my doctor told me, so is shirmp and salmon and catfish but only to about 6 grams which equals once a week. Plus fish also give you good vitamins and stuff like Omega 3 that helps with development.

It is not that you can't eat Tuna or other types of fish, it is only that you should abstain from eating more than certain amounts. The problem is not only mercury but also other metals. Check

According to all the replies so far my baby is as good as dead. I have eaten tuna about 4 times a week every week, with both pregnancies, along with god only knows how much other fish. Oops.

Tuna is a definite no-no during the pregnancy because of its high mercury content.
A good rule of thumb is that the larger the fish species, the more that you should avoid it. This is because mercury bio-accumulates (i.e. more of it accumulates in larger species). Mercury is a wonderful by-product from the burning of coal.
Small fish species are, generally, ok.
