I have been an electrician for 22 years but I am neither a journeryman nor master electrician because I have worked for myself. To become a journeyman you must work for 3 years under a master (in Ohio), then to become a master you must work under a master for another 5 years.
In the Ohio county where I live 'anyone' can work as an electrician, all you need is a business license, the same kind of license you get to sell shoes or balloons. How-ever in the next county over, you can not pull permits or get worked inspected if it's not done by at least a journeyman. It varies city by city, county by county and state by state. I strongly encourage you to get an electricians job with a certified company, so you can learn well and not have the limitations that I would have working elsewhere. It's good money and great work! Good luck!

You just need to get hired. To become a licensed electrician is another matter and varies all over the place depending on locale and local codes. Probably two or three years.
