Have a Firewall and Anti-Virus. They will normally stop all problems before they cause damage. Tho if you are hit by a brand new one you might not be so lucky, but they are normally intelligent.
AVG Free and Windows Firewall have never failed me. Port opening and closing is best if you know what your doing and that your not going to close a port that is required.

Closing your system ports is NOT a good idea ( unless its just some )... If you close your ports, bad things like no HTTP can happen. The best is to get an internet security suite. If you want to be TOTALLY hacker-proof, get off the internet.

The free version of Zone Alarm works better than Windoze firewall.
I also run the free version of AVG antivirus and the free Microsoft spyware scanner.

I use Norton Internet Security. All ports are invisible to outsiders.

Assuming you're running Windows XP (because you didn't give any more information):
1.) Start menu --> Control Panel
2.) Double-click "Windows Firewall"
3.) Click "On", then click "OK"
