That is a code parents use when referring to natural reproduction. They call it the birds and the bees b/c they have similar mating habits of those that humans posses, (no kidding, its in my bio book.) Parents try to explain how to reproduce as gently as possible, not to upset or disgust the child. Of course they start out with "When a man and a woman fall in love," Because they do not want to expose their children to homosexuality, therefore, they think, protecting their child. They then go into how sex works, (with the male and female parts coinciding.) Then they ask for questions. Birds and bees referrers to nature, and is a way to softly and gently start and extremely difficult conversation.

Birds and bees spread pollen that helps the fertilization of flowers and plants. People use this analogy to speak about sex, saying that the man spreads his pollen like a bird or bee and the woman is the plant or flower accepting the pollen to fertilize and make more flowers.
