Women love guys who play guitar, and in general guitar players are seen as cool, but most people are totally not impressed by advanced guitar techniques such as sweep picking, speed picking, fingertapping etc. They can hardly tell the difference between a jimi hendrix guitar solo and an yngwie malmsteen guitar solo. Why is this?

To play for others is fraught with pain. To play for oneself alone is wise and fulfilling. The idea is to play as well as one can, and to enjoy this intensely. Intense creative activity is not for the meek, or for dilettantes.... it is for great artists who sacrifice much of what others believe is important in life to achieve their art.

The reason others do not comprehend the subtleties of your techniques is because they do not recognize them, nor can they ... because they have not expended the time and energy to "see" them.

For peace of mind, and happiness.... accept what others say with politeness and zero attachment.

I've wondered about this kind of thing too- not just in relation to guitar but to music in general, and have found an answer by looking at my own experience with music. At first it takes place on a basic level (nothing really wrong with that) and is available to most anyone. To go beyond this the person has to make it a personal thing and pursue it by listening- and enjoying what they're hearing.(playing helps too, of course). With this approach there is no limit to the experience listening can provide; .it gets better and better, just by paying attention.
I've been lucky to know some very good musicians, and this is the main lesson I've learned from them. At some point I notice that they're hearing a lot more than I am, and at that point I lbegin to learn to hear on that level too. The key is having a personal interest, and the key to staying interested is enjoyment. It takes time and effort, and that's why so few... well, you said it already.
