It is not limited to a British accent, in general accents are different than hearing your own colloqueal, and you must pay more attention to someone who is speaking with an accent. In the US, there are distinct dialects and "ratings" that go with each - a southern drawl on a person with few teeth evokes a different reaction than the same drawl on Scarlett O'Hara's great granddaughter, dressed appropriately. It is a combination of sound, sight, and emotion. BTW, have you noticed that many people from India also speak with a British accent (it was a colony for a long time) without the same "trance" ?

Not quite Syd. It's just that we have to try to decypher what the heck was just said as the British seem to talk in circles.

its a trick ! the british have been planning to take white americans up to the mothership for a long time,first they have to put all u white americans in a trance, so for the love of everything thats holy , dont talk to british people,

To many Americans, the ENGLISH accent sounds very effeminate.
The Scottish accent does not.
Perhaps that is because the English do not eat oats, but feed them to their horses and raise fine horses.
The Scots, Irish, and Americans eat oats and raise fine men.
(BTW, the New England accent sounds very effeminate to Westerners.)
