Ok, my teacher asked me to start off my speech with an attention getter. He said that he usually starts off with a bible verse..

Does anyone have any ideas? This speech is an introduction speech, introducing myself to the class, by the way.

I like to start with a short story with a surprise ending that ties into my speech. Or I like to start with a joke and put people's names in them (who are attending the speech).

For an introduction speech, I would start off by telling something truely unique, memorable, or funny about yourself that is revealing--something that will make your audience interested in getting to know you more and give your audience insight about your personality.

For example If I had to to give an introduction speech I would begin with this story:

"My father gave me the best advice I have ever received. He gave me this advice when I was 4 years old. The neighbor boy beat me up. I remember him shoving me on the ground and I remember scraping my knees. I also remember running into the house to my daddy.

He asked me what happen and I told him. He asked me what did I do--I told him that ran into the house to tell him. He gave me a stern look and told me that I should have defended myself. He said that no one should every lay a hand on me to hurt me and I should go and beat that kid up.

He taught me how to punch, kick, bite and do anything and everything in my power to beat him up. Then he told me that if I ever came in the house beaten, without defending myself he would have another 'whopping' waiting for me when I came in!

So I did it. I went back out and gave the neighbor boy what he had coming.

When I think about that time, I think of my father's options. He could have held me and consoled me. He could have spoken to the child's parents. He could have yelled at the child himself.

Instead, my father decided to empower me so that I could learn to take care of myself.

And to this day, I still follow this advice. I don't go around fighting boys. I just feel empowered to do anything and accomplish anything.

That would be the story I would tell to begin introducing myself.

You could tell about something funny about your childhood or what happend yesterday.

Do you get the idea?

Attention Getters

An attention getter could be most anything. First consider your audience. Then the topic of which you plan to speak, and the purpose of your speech.

Humor is usually the best thing to use, but again it depends on the situation.

The point is when you take to the podium, you want the audience to be focused on you not fiddle farting around with their cell phones or yaking with the person sitting next to them.

Since you are "introducing" your self to the class, you might try asking them a question about themselves or maybe you could walk in and say Good morning, I am (the mayor, the governor, police chief) anything that might be shocking. Like Good morning, I am Joe, and I just save a bunch of money on my bicycle insurance by switching to bieco.

Just be natural and don't force it.

Yell, tell a joke, or say something no one really knows (like find a fact about the topic of your speech thats amazing). Of course I like some of these others, like I have a bomb. You'd probably get expelled though...
