I use to live in Columbia. There are only 3 or 4 airlines so there is very little competition. Also, there is no discount carriers like Air Tran or Southwest. If you are flying to Greenville check the rates for Charlotte it maybe cheaper and is only 50 miles away.

I would suspect all the stock car teams flying to and from there garages in South Carolina with all those full flights twice a week Sunday night to Monday morning and out on Wednesday morning to afternoon and crew members and principals flying out Thursday would make the airlines see a cash cow. The Nextel drivers fly out in private planes on Friday. Bush team drivers fly out on private planes Thursday. The truck drivers and motor home drivers move the equipment and cars, chefs and support people take airlines too

Plane tickets to anywhere costs a lot. The rising price of fuel is being passed on to the customers.

Air Fare is less in major cities with lots of competition and 'hub' cities. Its probably less to fly further to Orlando than SC.

Any place that has either not a lot of traffic or just a small airport that only a few airlines service is expensive.
