What was his point?

Bad intelligence - the CIA gave him wrong information. uh...hum...so they say. Many other country's intelligence agencies already had reported that the intelligence which the CIA had was faulty. But hey...they said so.

And then - perhaps - he wanted a good reason?
Iraq had oil and Saddam clearly was (is) a bad guy who killed thousands or hundred thousands.
And G.W.'s daddy already had trouble with Saddam.

Bush once said - god told him to invade Iraq. So either god really talked to him or Bush is hearing voices (your choice, depending on your belief).

Or - last theory - destabilizing the middle East helps a certain political agenda. With all the oil in the middle East, Israel being close and Iran being a thorn since ever. I see how Iraq as a first step can make sense in a whole bigger agenda to take control over the worlds scarce resources....by giving a reason the rest of the world would "accept".

Oh well - one reason I stay out of politics, it's a dirty biz

Bush knew there weren't any WMD's in Iraq. He cherry picked the intelligence to get what he wanted. When he said Saddam wouldn't let the weapons inspectors in he was lying. The inspectors were in Iraq asking for 2 more weeks to prove that there were no WMD's. Bush pulled them out so he could invade Iraq. Then the was Rumsfeld saying he knew exactly where they were. But when asked by Hans Blix, Rumsfeld told him it was a state secret. As for the 500 WMD's found, they were found by the Iraq Survey Group. This was in their Oct. 2004 report. It stated that the artillery shells they found were pre- Gulf War and so degraded they were not a threat. And you must remember that Congress only gave the "Authorization to Use Force" if Saddam didn't comply with UN Resolution 1440. And Saddam was complying with. The UN had to go back and rewrite 1440 so the Bush invasion was legal. Also 60% of the Democratic members of Congress voted against the authorization.

He knew full well about the weapons. There were some (courtesy of the USA actually) but they were discarded. The UN was kicked out because they became spies, not weapon inspectors (some did, not most, but that is enough to make Hussein justifiably mad).

It is mostly politics. And money. Some say it was about oil, but there are many other ways to make money.

it takes millions to get elected. So you have to be rich. The way to get rich in USA is stocks and shares. Companies like General Electric are the biggest producers of weapons of mass destruction (bombers, bombs etc.) War drives up the value of these sorts of companies, plus you may have also noticed how the government handed out contracts to rebuild Iraq without taking bids on who could do it the best or cheapest.

The people who voted and allowed this are profitting in the hundreds of millions by either owning shares, or knowing that this corporations will funnel it back when it comes time for re-election.

Also war generally drives up popluarity, and since Bush is bombing on economics, it was a much needed distraction.

I suspect he believed that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. We knew for example that Saddam had used WMD in the past, and had tried obtaining different kinds of weapons at different times. So it seemed logical that even if we didn't have concrete evidence of a current program, that surely once we got there they would turn up... right? Well, apparently wrong.

So technically, I don't think Bush actually lied. Now was he incompetent? Possibly, but if so, then so were a lot of our Republican and Democratic members of Congress.

Interestingly enough there is evidence that Saddam had plans to renew the WMD programs once sanctions were lifted.

I love these unintelligent answers. We have found WMD's as well as the components but somehow the liberal mind set tells us that they were not the "right" wmd's. Most of the stuff went into Syria because we spent so much time going into Iraq. Does Iraq breaking 15 UN resolutions ring a bell? Iraq figured we would never go in because of their dealings with France and Russia, well they got it wrong! It is time for Americans to wake up to the terrorist threat. The biggest mistake we made was not going into Iran first.

He didn't have a point! He wanted to invade Iraq and one of the excuses his people came up with was WMD. Of course, they were banking on the fact that most people don't know that Iraq had rid of its WMD already, since the end of the first Gulf war. That was confirmed by the UN search teams, time and time again.

There's a saying in politics, "if you gonna lie, lie big"... because NOBODY dares to think that you can lie that much.

He wanted an excuse to go into Iraq and take out Daddy's old enemy. Not having a valid one, the fictional weapons of mass destruction suited him just fine. And thousands of innocent people have died because of it.

Quite simply the reason he lied about WMDs is because fear is the best motivator for normally sensible and moral people to condone immoral and irrational actions. So far the tactic has worked brilliantly. Fortunately, there is a God in heaven, and justice still exists, and now that great deception is backfiring on him.

His point was simply to provide an avenue that was fertile ground for his political backers (i.e. wealthy oil companies, construction conglomerates, and military contractors) to make money.

He had to try to finish the war is Daddy couldn't at any cost. If Bush ever writes a book I bet the title would be "How to mess up as many countries as possible in just 8 short years"

He didn't lie....he was going on info/intel from other countries and previous administrations that had been saying the same thing for years. He was the one to finally act on it.

It was the douche-bags in the UN that wanted to 'inspect' everything first, tell them that they are coming, and gave the Iraqis plenty of time to move alot of the weapons out of there.
