I remember reading in I Samuel 21:13 And he changed his behaviour before them, and feign himself mad in their hands,an scrabbled on the gate, and let spittle fall down upon his beard.

YES.
Your question relates to a philosophical perspective called "Situational Ethics". Let me give you some examples.

1. A lady was hiding Jews during WWII and she lied to the Nazis telling them she had seen no Jews.

2. A lady was going to be raped by a dude and she cried and said she had the HIV virus. He didn't rape her.

3. If you were hi-jacked and a crook asked you for your pin number on your debit card, you could lie to buy some time to be helped.

I could go on and on with examples. In situational ethics you have to look at the situations and determine if its ethically correct to either lie or refrain from telling the truth to mislead.

In the Bible the Jews were scouting the land they were given by God and a prostitute lied to soldiers telling them she did not see any Jews. The Bible says for this "she was blessed by God".

Sometimes the truth has to be compromised. But not for any ole thing. The truth is the best but sometimes it just isn't. Believe me though I am a crusader for the truth and justice in my life.

Of course, if you have compassion for the shortcomings you see within your friends. As far as people with great power go, they compromise the truth all the time to serve political purposes.

Ask the Catholic Church...they seem to have no problems with compromise, and last I heard they were supposed to be the authority on "purity and truth"
