So I'm trying to sand the peeling paint off an old door, and I'm not too sure what to do. My dad didnt leave any instructions. I've taken the door off it's hinges, brought it into my garage and put it onto a workbench. The only sander I could find is a Black and Decker "finishing" sander, with a 1/4 inch sheet. Do I need a coarser grain? Should I sand the paint off by hand with a coarse paper, and then finish it with the sander? Please help!!

There are a number of ways to remove old paint.... heat gun, chemicals, and sanders....

If you decide you want to use a sander, then purchase some 60 grit sandpaper, 100 grit, and 180 grit. Remove the faded paint with the 60 grit, and run over the door again, with 100 grit, and finally 180 grit. Always sand with the direction of the grain.

If you want to try a chemical paint remover, Id suggest a citrus based paint remover.. more user friendly. Just follow the directions on the brand you buy, and then give the door a light sanding with 180 grit paper when done.

A heat gun can also be used, to soften the paint, and you can scrape it off with a putty knife then.

Have Fun!

I would definitely use a heat gun to soften the paint then scrape it off with a putty knife. Do it outside as it will stink. Use the lower setting on the gun- it will do a better job and not scorch the wood. Sand it off with a med-fine sandpaper. How much sanding you do really depends on if you are repainting the door or want to finish with a clear coat.

Start with a paint stripper. Remove as much as possible that way before any sanding. Start with medium sandpaper only after the door has dried thoroughly. Finish with fine. Make sure its not lead paint especially before any sanding.
