Is it a deep and meaningful question that we'll never stop asking or is it much more straight forward and simple than we think and can it really just be summed up in a few words??!!

It depends on your views about humanity. If you believe we are entirely the product of evolution and chance - i.e. out of all the billions of planets which exist in the universe, on this planet the conditions just happened to be right for life to flourish, and eventually evolve into humans, totally by luck and chance, with no outside intervention - then there is no 'aim' in life. There is no purpose to our existence, we simply are. However, as we have evolved reasoning and complex logical abilities, we could always create a purpose for ourselves - for example, people could decide that mankind should aim to colonise other planets, and put all efforts into doing so, bringing up future generations of children to believe that this is the purpose of mankind.

If, however, you believe that there is some level of intelligent design in the creation of humanity - that some outside force - perhaps God, perhaps another, alien species - created, or influenced the creation, of human beings, then they must have done so for a reason. There is no real evidence that any outside force is specifically, directly controlling the day-to-day lives of human beings, so one could suppose that they are simply observing us and how we interact with one another. Therefore, it could be the case that we exist in order to provide information or amusement to some form of superior being or beings. (Rather like having a colony of ants in a science lab and observing them)

Finally, I do not know of anyone, of any race/sex/religion, who, at some point, has not asked themselves this question - 'Why am i here? What is my aim in life? What is my purpose?'. It would appear that everyone, for some reason, is searching for the answer to the same question - maybe that we are somehow genetically programmed to ask that question, to find a purpose to our lives. So, I suggest, my final answer -

We exist to discover the reason for our existence.

I think it is one of those deep questions that not only differs for everyone, but also keeps changing as you keep changing. Right now, my goal in life is to be a better person, to know and act upon what is right versus what is wrong. I want to have a passion for life and the people in it. I mean, in the end, whether or not you succeeded as being a wealthy billionaire, doesn't matter, but whether or not you chose to live as a person of morals and integrity can change the world. And even if it only changes on person, wouldn't you agree its worth it?.....Hope that helps.

Life to me is vigorous, passionate and constant effort for a cause, for a love, whatever it may be, it is entirely up to you, and then, it is a humble and whole hearted acceptance of all consequences so far. Along with the realisation this it is not all, and it will never be.

My aim is to live like a candle. Where a candle sees with its lights it enables others to see as well. The light of a candle belongs to all, but the one who lights it deserves recognition. Light spreads across boundaries and enters into the regions of darkness with courage. My life should be like a gradual spreading out of the my light.

For me personally my aim in life is to continue to create/write music, it's a gift from God and it's what I'm here to do, make something that is pleasing to Him. To add to that, like the many artists that inspired me, I have hopes that I can add to the equation by doing something that will inspire others to pass the torch to the next generation and so on, keep music alive and inspired.

we don't really know.
i side with the deep and meaningful answer...just because life is too complicated to be summed up in a few words, and theres too much out there that we haven't been to, we haven't understood.

I only have a temporary purpose or destiny.....to decrease pain and increase pleasure.....all else is lost to oblivion.

In a thousand years, all your accomplishments will be forgotten. You'll make an impact on your kids, but even they will eventually turn to dust. Your name will be etched on a tombstone or inked on a family tree, but even that will eventually turn to stone.

to enjoy infinite delight by pursuing our own happiness with every nerve and fibre of our being and every minute and moment, despite our limitations in the brain area - and thus experiencing love, meaning, fulfillment, bliss, peace, perpetual excitement, calm - everything good in infinite quantity, like nothing, like a room neither too hot nor too cold, like a dazzling darkness, like something infinitely alive/alove and infinitely peaceful at the same time

in fewer words: most ardent pursuit of our own happiness

[in which are contained love of others and love of love]

Oh my word Melissa, you've broughtt out the pack of happy clappers.

To serve my lord the best way I can. Pathetic. You wouldn't be here if your parents hadn't copulated. Its a shame they didn't go the one step further and provide you with free thought rather than brainwash you with backward mumbo jumbo beliefs.

Look at it this was - no shagging, no people, no believing in imaginary and pretend story books.

Uh! Melissa me dear, you have to formulate your questions more subtly next time as you tend to attract the wrong sort (me?)
