2001 Civic DX has a non-VTEC engine whereas compared to the EX model that does have VTEC. That's why when shopping for parts, they ask you that question. Other than that, the DX is the lower-scale model available without options such as power windows, power door locks, power mirrors.

The EX model is V-tec and your DX model is just the plain base model with no real frills or oomph. The DX trans couldnt handle bein hooked up to an EX motor. And the EX trans would not shift properly with the DX motor. The gear ratios are higher on an EX also.

Most of the differences are trim level like power windows and leather and intoerio things but in this case you do not have a vtec motor and the the EX does.
So you need to have dx parts in some cases.

Honda makes different engine types fastest being Si, Ex, Hf, then Dx. So most parts would have to be different.

Usually, badging like ex/dx denotes trim level. Check out some of the Honda forums and find out for sure.
